Every year the Pantone Color Institute announces what they feel will be the color of the year. They base there selection on “what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” For 2016, Pantone introduced two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity as the PANTONE Colors of the Year. “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”

Along side the ideas that Pantone gives us in choosing our color palettes, in interior design we see similar patterns. In a time where the world needs to disconnect from technology and be more connected with our culture, art and nature, designers this season have gravitated towards a palette that is first and foremost calming. Seeing colors from natural resources like blues and greens in our home help bring that feeling of tranquility, relaxation and mindful surroundings.

One color that speaks volumes to this trend is navy blue! Pick up any home design magazine and their feature is in Navy blue!!

Navy blue has always been a staple color in home decorating as it is a great neutral color that goes with every style and can accent with any color. But this year we have seen it every where making it a popular color this year.

As a designer that services interiors, custom window treatments, pillows and upholstery; my work room has been filled with beautiful fabrics in all shades of blues. From a dark navy denim to a floral indigo blue pattern, I have been loving the fabrication of all these amazing blue hues and working them into peoples’ homes.

magazinesAs our bench for Bella was coming together I noticed on the cover of September’s issue of Country Living, they featured this banquette seating area. I must say its a bit ironic the similarities but the look is just what I love.

Recently I was asked by the owner of Bella Lei to help create a more inviting waiting room for the salon. He showed me a picture of aInspiration beautiful living room that was filled with stunning blue pillows and a woven blue wallpaper. Shades of blue was one of our inspiration colors and I was excited to make this trend work for this busy space!

After some recent updates to the salon, a new waiting room was in desperate need to accommodate the many clients that come to the full service salon in Cedarburg.  With only an over sized couch and two side chairs the seating arrangement wasn’t ideal for the room. I decided the best way to gain more seating without overwhelming the room with furniture was to add a custom built bench seat. Having a long bench also allowed me to pick some fabulous pillows with fun textures colors and designs!

grasscloth wallpaperAfter finalizing the plans for the bench seat the real fun started by making our selections for fabrics, wall coverings and paint color. For the walls we decided on a beautiful grass cloth wallpaper that really grabbed the look of our inspiration picture and captured the hues of blues and silver that was found through out the other areas of the salon. We also picked a beautiful Sherwin Williams Agreeable Grey paint color to freshen up all the wood work in the room including the new bench seat with the wood paneled wall. The grey and blue wallpaper were a perfect pairing!

For the seat cushion I chose a durable grey fabric with a linen like texture. The neutral soft fabric was the perfect base for all the fun pillows I found on my many shopping trips. I love combining the texture and colors of the different sized pillows. The silvers and navy blues look amazing together!

For the rest of the room I added two blue velvet chairs with a pop of mustard yellow on the pillows.  To add some warmth to the room I accented with natural wood finished vases, trays and artwork.

When I was all finished putting the room together I felt right at home. The room didn’t feel stuffy anymore with the new calming colors of blues and grey. The spacial floor plan made for a better space for clients to spread out and be more comfortable. I knew this navy blue inspired room would be a happy inviting space for Bella Lei’s customers to come and relax.

To continue this blue trend through out the salon, I chose a beautiful blue damask print wallpaper to welcome clients in the front entry room. This definitely helped tie the whole salon together and give it a rich elegant feel to everyone entering.
